Exactly. It would have played right into the hands of the militarists. It probably would have encouraged a conditional surrender which was the whole desire of the vast majority of the fanatics.

But no matter: we agreed to a conditional surrender after destroying the inhabitants of two cities who were totally helpless. I am surely glad I wasn't a little wandering boy sitting on the edge of the creek and looking at the clouds back then and there. By random chance you also escaped that strange choice of being killed in order to force the conditional surrender...that surrender which was being sought by the Japanese before the Bombs, and which was quickly agreed to by the United States after the Bombs...
