Musharraf’s promised purge finds broad support in Pak

General Pervez Musharraf's pledges in a speech on Saturday to sever links to terrorism in Kashmir and to purge Pakistan of Islamic militancy appear to have won broad public support.
His strong measures to shut down the most militant groups active in Kashmir suggest that the military, which had used such organizations as tools of foreign policy, may also be falling into line.

Spelling out in detail what General Musharraf means by ending support for terror in Kashmir, a Pakistani intelligence official suggested that there may be enough common ground with India to ease the current crisis and to revive the search for diplomatic solutions.

"The decision has been taken to completely shut down all militant groups even if their claim to legitimacy is based on their activism inside of Kashmir," the official said.

Indian officials privately acknowledge that they cannot expect all violence to end in Kashmir and are discussing concrete steps they can demand of General Musharraf, an Indian diplomat here said.
