As for aliens being further out there than supernatural...hmmm.

Just the numbers auger that there is some kind of life out there somewhere. True the light speed barrier makes communications tedious and costly, to say nothing of the travel problems since it would be hard to make a ship travel at much more than even 1% of light speed.
That said, there is no reason that this galaxy could not have been explored at 1% of light speed in a few million years by an exploration minded race.

Now the traffic and cargo is not practical, however communication is practical since that would get back home at 100 times the speed of the exploration ships. Infformation, newtech, etc all could be gathered.
I would expect such an exploring race to tread with stealth mode full engaged lest they encounter some race the acts like disturbed hornets.

Since this universe is a few billion years old I think there is a good chance that some degree of exploration by others has taken place. They may have passed us by, they may be here with eyes and ears open and recoders running. How would we know?

I find this a lot easier to give credence to than a supernatural event.

As to finding them out? they will have been aware of our radio and radar from the start and need only stay just out of sight of such equipment as we have now.
In addition we are not really looking for them since all and sundry seem to feel they are not there.

Now we have the Seti search, well, that will find energy from other start systems, but not local stealthed communications.
Remember that we can make stealthed communications that even we cannot find without an energy distribution analysis to find out if there is .1% extra energy in a wide band. That extra .1% is the communications in spread spectrum mode.

In fact the level of such communications can be in the area of a few millionths of a % of the envelope energy and can not be found by scanning. It can only be heard by synchronised spectrum jumping receivers according to a 1 time pad of times with the transmitter spending a microsecond or two on each frequency and with a little overlap communications is quite secure and possible.
Military does this now. This traffic is also encrypted.

How do we find such stealthed encrrypted communications from another race?

The luck of being close to a transmitter site so you have the local energy a higher % of the envelope makes it easier. After gathering the data and analyzing it you may be able to reconstruct the signal that is still encrypted and then a new problem ocurs....crack the crypto.

In the absence of any search for them they are able to stay well hiddedn.

Advanced stealth is also able to hide their craft from our radar.

Are they there? I find the potential for their existence far more credible that supernaturaal events...even though I have seen neither.
