Paul, <why they didn't have their butt-slapping EPS contests in the past few quarters when AMD preannounced a poor quarter?>

I remember winning the EPS contest for Q4 1998 AMD earnings:

Message 7318521

Many similarities between then and now:

1) AMD pushed volumes over ASP, which helped ASP to drop like a rock.
2) Intel reporting a very strong quarter and recovering from a slowdown in previous quarters.
3) The AMDroids were saying "Die size is everything" and "Wait until K7."
4) You were dueling with the AMDroids in typical fashion.
5) I predicted AMD would move into laptops for the year.

But to be fair, AMD is in a stronger position today than they were in 1999. That's lucky for them, because Hammer is still slipping and will probably not be as big of a jump as the original K7 was.
