Caxton,
It seems that the press is starting to recognize the cost advantages cdma carriers have over the competition, almost all the articles point out the lesser upgrade costs for cdma carriers
Of course, it might be "cheaper" but I still say the only benefit of 3G is the added voice capacity (which will be a great benefit to existing CDMA carriers). I believe 3G "data" is more of a pipe dream.
I still find it hard to believe that AWE is gonna be successful with the mess they are planning to build out.
EDGE will provide additional capacity, then the migration to CDMA will come.
I wonder how the costs compare to WCDMA.
Well, one would need to consider the cost of implementing a WCDMA network v. ripping out their infrastructure and implementing a CDMAone/CDMA2000 network.
Of course, for Qualcomm shareholders, if Cingular and the usual suspects (Voicestream, AT&T, Nextel, et al.) ripped out their "older" technologies and implemented a CDMA2000 network, Qualcomm would skyrocket....
I don't see that happening. However, one thing to consider, though. There might be "margin" pressure on Nextel given the QChat feature. If VZ Wireless and PCS implement such a feature, would that cause a higher churn at Nextel? The next question is how quickly could a VZ Wireless/PCS implement such a feature and how quickly could handset vendors support such a feature.
Instead of the saying "GSM is toast", writing (IMO) is appearing on the wall, it is becoming clearer...
What does it say....
