It is very advantageous for grandparents to be the owners as the assets remains on their side of the ledger rather than the Parent or Beneficiary. This advantage becomes apparent when financial aid decisions are made by the university by fed formula. I am looking at Fidelity/New Hampshire plan which is hooked into upromise.com. The NH plan gives you age based plan which reweights every year to a more conservative portfolio as age 18 gets closer. They also allow you to pick from an assortment of investment options (eg growth ,income etc). Below is a useful tool i got from FiloF. mike
