Petz, Re: "Because when the 1.4 - 1.9 (now 2.0) XP's were released, the fastest AMD chip was at 1.4 GHz. The slowest XP is as fast as the fastest TBird."

AMD's Athlon XP 1500+ ran at 1.33GHz, 67Mhz slower than the 1.4GHz Thunderbird. They had downbinned the part, either because they wanted a Quantispeed filler for that range, or because Palomino simply binned out at those lower speeds. According to some benchmarks, the Athlon XP 1500+ was often outperformed by the Athlon 1.4GHz, but still, AMD was able to get away with charging more for it at the time, all thanks to the fake model numbers.
