From next-generation Q & A section
Let's hope Sega of Japan DOESN'T get their way!!!

July 2, 1997

Q:
With the coming of 3Dfx, do you think the Mac can become a viable gaming platform--one which might rival the PC? Or is it too little too late, like the Sega Saturn? Also, is the 3Dfx solely for PCI-based Macs, or can the earlier generations of Power-PC based Macs (e.g., the 7100) take advantage and bear fruitful results?

A:
There is great potential for the Mac as a gaming platform (there always has been). The main difference now is that with 3Dfx the opportunity for even faster (cheaper) ports can make it even more viable. As for the second half of your question, the board is only slated for PCI-based machines (no Nubus solution is expected).

Q:
Could Sega be using the development of a 3Dfx Voodoo based system as a smoke screen to hide a much more powerful system using Lockheed's Real3D chipset?

A:
Sega of America is pushing for 3Dfx. Sega of Japan is pushing for PowerVR. That is all. Lockheed Martin, so far as every development and internal source is currently aware, is not even in contention.
