Hi Nadine Carroll; Re "Bilow, Boutros Boutros Ghali is a UN official." Yeah, we all know that. But his resume includes:

BOUTROS BOUTROS-GHALI (EGYPT)
...
At the time of his appointment by the General Assembly on 3 December 1991, Mr. Boutros-Ghali had been Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign Affairs of Egypt since May 1991 and had served as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs from October 1977 until 1991.

You might read his resume. It pretty much proves that the Egyptians are not particularly prejudiced against Coptic Christians, at least. The positions he held were top cabinet posts, and he's had them for decades. I'm surprised you didn't know this, he was instrumental in negotiating a lot of stuff with Israel.

Re: "I doubt it. Most of the world is telling the story it wants to hear about Israel. Did you see Yossi Halevi's description of world press coverage on the day the Israelis captured Arafat's munitions ship?"

This is Israel's big problem. The political reality in the US is that the Republicans are eventually going to return to their traditional isolationism and wash their hands of the Middle East, and the Democrats (who are likely going to be in power if the economy continues to deteriorate), well here's what their activists are saying:

Tina Staik
"... Some nations are "granted" BULLY rights by the MIBIC, i.e., Israel; others are given mere lip service, i.e., Palestinians. ..."

Dotty LeMieux, Green Dog Democrats
"... Our support for Israel has caused untold suffering in Palestine. ..."

Bevin Gilmore
"... Observe the continuing tragedy of the Middle East. In one stupid, astonishing visit by Sharon to the Temple Mount, seven years of work was wiped out. At the time I could not think of anything more calculated to drive every Palestinian on earth into an emotional rage of epic proportions. Sharon is like a minor Hitler to these people. Who gave him permission to wipe out seven years of work? It is clear that there truly IS nothing we can do about the terrorist, the one willing to destroy all progress in one quick blow, and it is now also clear that the right-wingers of Israel will NEVER allow the sacrifices necessary to forge a "real politick" peace in this region where East meets West. ..."

The People’s Summit: The Middle East Conflict
To maximize the constructiveness of our summit, we must lay down some guidelines for submissions. I can think of no better model to follow than that used by a very wise marriage counselor I once knew, whose father was Jewish and whose mother was Syrian. Afterall, the relationship between the Israelis and the Palestinians is, in essence, very much like a dysfunctional marriage – one in which the “children” are suffering from the parents’ inability to get along.

The Democrats tend to be moved by the heart, and the Palestinians are doing better in that area than the Israelis. The Republicans tend to be moved by the head, and I, for one, am simply not prepared to accept a semi permanent reduction in the internal freedoms of this country for the sake of Israel. You guys need to recognize that this is the way it is going to be and figure out what you're going to do about it.
