You might read his resume. It pretty much proves that the Egyptians are not particularly prejudiced against Coptic Christians, at least. The positions he held were top cabinet posts, and he's had them for decades. <
One man does not prove this, any more than Colin Powell as Secretary of State proves that there is no racism in the US. The Coptic Christians have been suffering through some very nasty pogroms. I remember reading about them last year.
The Republicans tend to be moved by the head, and I, for one, am simply not prepared to accept a semi permanent reduction in the internal freedoms of this country for the sake of Israel.
Do it for your own sake then. Have you noticed that Al Quaeda is not aimed at Israel? Bin Laden didn't even care about Israel until he started tacking the Palestinians onto his list of grievances for the sake of political expediency.
As is becoming clearer by the day, the terrorists of militant Islam are all joining forces. Did Al Quaeda and Hizbullah bomb our troops in Lebanon and Saudi Arabia or the Cole in Yemen because of Israel? You seriously think these guys just have beefs because of Israel, they would be hunky-dory if Israel just went away? Not a chance.
These guys are pursuing a crazed totalitarian political philosophy that absolutely needs a scapegoat to blame for all their troubles. If Israel weren't around, they would find someone else. They probably would spend more time attacking all Western installations in the Middle East. In fact, Israel is the canary in the coal mine for the rest of us.
Why do you keep quoting from Democrats.com as if it proved something about majority positions in this country? To quote from their site, "Democrats.com is the largest independent community of Democratic activists. We're the aggressive progressives!". These guys are far left, not the party platform. In all the polls that I've seen, Americans continue to support the Israelis over the Palestinians by more than 3 to 1.
You guys need to recognize that this is the way it is going to be and figure out what you're going to do about it.
And what's your suggestion, the Israelis commit national suicide? You say Republicans are moved by the head, well be moved by this: We are going to go to war in Iraq this year to reacquire some respect in the Middle East. When we do, we will be able to count on Israel as a powerful ally that actually acts like an ally, as opposed to the State Department's perennial favorite, Saudi Arabia. |
