NY Dem Calls for Investigation into Clinton's Enrongate Ties

Rep Elliot Engel (D-NY) called for an investigation into Bill Clinton's ties to Enron on Monday, saying he wanted any probe into the collapse of the energy giant to be comprehensive.

"I don't think we should exclude anything," Engel told WABC Radio's Steve Malzberg. "You want to look into Enron's ties with the Clinton administration, I'm all for it. We ought to look into everyone's ties with Enron."

Engel's comments were the latest signs that the Enrongate scandal may disappoint party faithful who only days earlier were predicting the scandal would be "Bush's Whitewater."

But as more information emerges daily suggesting the Clinton administration may actually be guilty of the type of Enrongate misconduct that Democrats were hoping to pin on Bush, the investigation promises to be an uphill battle.

Consider this exchange between the conservative talker and the liberal congressman:

MALZBERG: Has there been any wrongdoing by the Bush administration?

ENGEL: I don't think we know, and I think what I think isn't too important. I think Congress has to investigate and hold hearings and find out and get to the bottom of it.

MALZBERG: It looks to me that there's nothing there as it applies to the Bush administration.

ENGEL: That appears to be the fact. Calls were made and nothing was done. But on the other hand we want to know what role Enron might have played in developing the administration's energy policy.

Vice President Cheney has refused to reveal who his energy task force has been meeting with and the administration finally has said that Cheney has met with Lay and his staff has met with Enron representatives at least 5 or 6 times.

So I think There are things we need to find out. (End of Excerpt)
