Incidentally, Kurt Warner and the Packers will have a reunion Sunday at the Dome in St. Louis. The Packers were Kurt's first team, but he isn't exactly giddy over the memories. Long before he became a two-time NFL MVP, a three-time Pro Bowl selection and one of the most esteemed quarterbacks of our generation, Warner was an anonymous, tormented rookie in Green Bay's training camp.
Warner, undrafted out of Northern Iowa, accepted Green Bay's $5,000 signing bonus to fill the thankless "camp arm" role, which is approximately one step above ballboy status.
Warner hung around for a few weeks, giving Green Bay QB's Brett Favre, Mark Brunell and Ty Detmer a break during passing drills. The veteran quarterbacks razzed the rookie from the Iowa cornfield. Favre called Warner "Pop," as in Pop Warner, and as tradition, Favre made Warner carry his helmet after practice.
