Silver Nitrate Inhibits Bacterial Growth in Plant Tissue Cultures

A number of researchers have reported that addition of silver nitrate to the culture medium promotes in vitro regeneration, possibly due to the compound’s anti-ethylene activity. T. Orlikowska and colleagues at Poland’s Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture report that, not only does silver nitrate stimulate direct shoot regeneration from rose (Rosa indica) leaves taken from in vitro cultures and cocultivated with Agrobacterium tumefaciens for genetic transformation studies, but the compound also inhibits bacterial growth after cocultivation (Genet. Pol. 37A:122-125, 1996). At a concentration of 100 mg/liter in after-cocultivation regeneration medium, silver nitrate completely retards bacterial growth for up to 3 weeks. It is thus able to replace cefotaxime and carbenicillin which are often phytotoxic at least during the first passage after cocultivation with bacteria.
