I think that part of what we are seeing is that a lot of option positions get locked in fairly early, especially at the extremes of the range. As we progress to expiration date the new action tends to be much close to the max pain point so that it does not affect the point to a great extent. My simplistic view is that whether the point moves much or not, the important thing is that it shows a tendency to take out a lot of positions at expiration and may explain why I can write a lot of covered calls and still keep my stocks.
