I have a config I made from Dell's web site for a Dimension 4400 for $1801.00 (including free printer) less $100 rebate (that would give $1701.00) . Just add Firewire I/F for a complete system.
I have the actual html file but it won't paste very well. If you, or anyone else want a copy, just post your email.
So, when all is said and done, you can get an "equivalent" Wintel machine but looks and integration of H/W and S/W are better for the iMac than the Dell IMO.
If anyone wants to really compare and contrast these two machines, you could spend a day on it as you can easily see both machines don't offer the "same" processor, processor clock speed, the same motherboard, I/O bus speed, etc ....
