I think it is because Ashcroft is hated by many liberals and the press has a liberal bias. They might not be this biased against any Republican, but they hate Ashcroft. Also I think Daschle has more skill at getting things done while keeping it "under the radar".

Tim, I think Reps. hide too much behind the press's "liberal bias". I don't remember a lot of liberal bias when the press hounded Clinton or Conduit.

Honestly, and you will probably not believe this, but I don't think many people trust Reps. when it comes to human rights. When I hear people like R. Limbaugh, or A. Coulter or P. Buchanan or Falwell rant, my immediate reaction is that these people don't have a clue as to what democracy means......and would eliminate it if they could. I don't expect you to agree but that is always a gut reaction on my part and I suspect on the parts of others as well.
