You found one here. Back in 81, I was instantly an IBM PC fan because it used an Intel CPU. At that time I was building a small machine language programmable computer, and Intel was very good at providing application notes, technical support, even the occasional sample.

So my original reason for chosing the IBM PC line (bought one a couple years later when I could afford one), was based on the choice of CPU.

As to contemporary purchases - I would agree most people don't buy based on the CPU - it just so "happens" though that most of the CPUs are Intel based (most of the rest being AMD).

Intel's ad campaing with the Pentium inside was the first advertisement by any chip company of a chip product. It has helped them maintain market share at a time when competitive pressure from AMD was fiercest (about 6-12 months ago), and will likely help them increase market share now that they are back in the lead wrt product and manufacturing.
