I think liberals probably dislike Rumsfield more; I know the press does.

I've seen more bashing of Ashcroft, but maybe I was just paying more attention to the news when Ashcroft bashing was in. Most of what I've seen on Rumsfield at least since 9/11 has been positive, but I haven't been watching or reading news from ABC, CBS, NBC, or the New York Times recenntly to name just a few sources that might be biased against him.

No, my gut reaction is that they are pissed that they are restrained by the rules of democracy.

I see more of that from the extreme left in the US then from the right.

Remember that dictatorships are typically conservative, not liberal.

I think you use conservative to mean whatever will sound bad at the moment. Come up with a specific definition that you can use consistantly. Post it. I will tell you if I find it to be acceptable. (If it isn't acceptable then that really means we are using two different ideas when we use the word conservative.

Hitler was not conservative, he was radical, and he expanded state control of the economy. He was not liberal either (either in the classical sense of supporting liberal government or in the modern sense of modern democratic socialism), but his ideas have just about no connection to either classical conservative thought or the ideas of the Republican party. About the only idea that I can think of that Bush would share would be the desire for a strong military. You might be able to make the argument that someone like Pinochet was a conservative but it can also be argued that in the long run the fact that he took over was good for the country (The main question is how bad the alternative was many liberals think the alternative was just great, some conservatives think the alternative would have been outright socialism wrecking the economy. As with many what ifs its hard to know for sure)

Many dictatorships are communist. Communism is a more extreme form of socialism. Hitler and his ilk are not a more extreme form of Reagan or Newt Gingrich.

Strange how you had all these quotes at your fingertips. You've been planning this response for a while, haven't
you? Admit, Fowler!!

www.google.com is a useful tool.

I have argued about the same or a very closely related topic before, in fact it was with you on this message base, but it might have been over a year ago. I didn't find and save quotes from back then to use now.
