I believe that the first flag raised on Iwo Jima was a small one and not easily seen. A large flag was sent from the coast when it was apparent Mt. Suribachi was taken. That is the raising that was photographed but not particularly staged. (It helps to live next to the Museum of the Pacific War) tpwd.state.tx.us iwojima.com TP
