It goes beyond being processor-bound. You need a program that performs many operations over arrays or vectors, otherwise the Altivec is not much help.

Well, yes that's true. But that range of operations wasn't chosen arbitrarily or pig-headedly. It was chosen because it just so happens that most real-world processor-bound tasks in fact require many operations over arrays or vectors. AltiVec provides excellent acceleration for signal processing (such as image processing and audio processing), data compression and decompression, and 3-D rendering.

So let me ask you this. What tasks, exactly, do you regularly perform on your computer that (1) are slow enough that you have to wait for them, and (2) are processor-bound (not e.g. bandwidth-bound), and (3) cannot be accelerated by AltiVec?
