agreed Earlie..the boat biz is hitting the rocks...and has been a mess for over 20 years...over capacity in the 80's prompted erwin jacobs to form his boat manufacturing conglomerate buying up all the small players..then the asian contagin of the 90's created more over capacity and fewer dollars chasing to many goods..the failure of omc last year now leaves one domestic maker of marine engines (BC)...same goes with the sailboat market..one quality manufacturer that comes to mind pacfic seacraft sold out to the asians back in the late 80's if i remember right...its very troubling for me to see the exportation of our labor...kinda reminds me of spain of about 400 years ago, but thats another story eh?
as far as overall boat sales go it's down drasticly in CA and TX..many dealers are folding ..including the dealership i sold 4 years ago...the service end of the biz is down also (repairs and surveys).
the trend of memberships in the yacht clubs i frequent are down..a trend that has continued for several years..
several reasons i have noted in the industry is failure to get new blood in the sport and inability to make quality entry level equipment (this was the #1 complaint from newbies to boating in some national surveys)...people don't have the time nor the discreationary dollars to play with boats anymore.
i could go on but i'm tired...maybe i'll go take the boat out and do some fishing..but i'm sure the battery is sulfated and the stale gas has gummed up the carburators :(
