THE SCOOP

Pokey Reese
sports.espn.go.com

Jan. 16: The Los Angeles Daily News reports the Dodgers are in serious discussions with Reese in hopes of making him their everyday shortstop. The Dodgers apparently don't want to go another season with Alex Cora at shortstop and also don't want to rush prospect Cesar Izturis, who the Dodgers acquired from the Blue Jays this offseason, into the starting role to begin the season. Reese was acquired by the Red Sox from the Rockies on Dec. 19 but then was non-tendered a day later, making him a free agent. The Red Sox are still hopeful of signing Reese to be their second baseman. The Tigers are also believed to be in the mix on Reese.

Ugueth Urbina
sports.espn.go.com

Jan. 16: With the acquisition of Odalis Perez, the Dodgers now have seven potential starting pitchers. ESPN's Peter Gammons reports with that surplus it's believed the Dodgers may now make a push to acquire Urbina from the Red Sox to be their closer with Daal being the main trade bait. But in order for the Red Sox to deal Urbina they need to find another closer. Jeff Shaw is the logical guy, but he's apparently against signing with the Red Sox because Boston is too far from his home in central Ohio. Unless Shaw changes his stance of playing close to home he may retire.
