I go with Ken on "The American Taliban". The government has the job to prosecute him and they will. That's the important part. And not just to send a message but to protect us from an enemy, home-grown or not.

The press coverage is about soap opera and morality plays. This guy is a third-rate idiot soldier that would be freed if he was Afghani. He broke a serious law and has not 'erred'; he chose to be a criminal and should be prosecuted.

In sentencing, the fact that a) he surrendered and b) maybe provided info that was militarily useful can be considered in efforts to mitigate the time spent in prison. Unless evidence emerges that his acts not just aided but directly caused casualties on the allied-to-US side, life w/o parole seems excessive but 10-20 might be perfect.

This is all the turf journalists should zero in on. Instead, we'll have his parents on trial, Marin County/kooky kalifornia/loopy liberals on trial with interviews of his daycare providers and former girlfriends. Which has nothing to do with the simple issue that he knowingly broke a law that has serious consequences.

Unfortunately, the media-as-pastor is what rules in corporate US newsrooms whose job it is to improve ratings, thereby to sell ads. Geraldo, Bill O'Reilly, and Katie Couric just don't do good Moses impressions. I'd rather watch bowlers fish.
