Cingular Wireless has started field testing GAIT technology, that allows customers to move seamlessly between Cingular's TDMA and GSM networks. The testing includes the world's first GAIT-compliant phone that allows users to access GSM, TDMA, and analog networks.

The testing is occurring throughout Cingular's markets, with most of the focus in the Southeast region. Testing is scheduled to continue through February 2002, with the first market launches planned for March 2002 and rollouts continuing through late 2002.

To enable Cingular customers to access GSM and TDMA technologies, Cingular has made several network enhancements. One important change is a new network gateway for communicating between GSM and TDMA. This gateway is called an Interworking and Interoperability Function (IIF). One of the functions of the IIF is to enable the transfer of short messages (SMS) to users who are -accessing the other technology. The IIF also allows the GSM and TDMA networks to "talk" to each other. <<
