The United States is a Pacific power, with long standing allies. It is also a maritime nation, dependent upon open sea lanes for commerce and defense. The Chinese have aspirations to regional hegemony, at least. The United States is a more effective counterweight than Japan, since nations like Korea and the Phillippines still have hard feelings and distrust of the Japanese. As long as China and the United States are able to maintain a constructive relationship, China will prosper economically, and the United States will not have to worry much about Chinese adventurism. But for the relationship to be constructive, it has to be based on respect. The Chinese cannot feel that we will subordinate everything to trade.

In the Middle East, it is difficult to predict where we will "land" after the current campaign is over.........
