What makes people go to such extremes?

I can think of a few reasons (btw, did you see the good New York Times Magazine article on suicide bombers a few months back?)

Indoctrination from an early age.
Kindergarten camps for would-be suicide bombers, run by Hamas and Fatah.
Mullahs who assure you that this is not suicide, but 'martyrdom'.
Selection, training and grooming by the Hamas organizer at your local mosque.
The local culture that makes 'martyrdom' so honorable that the entire village will congradulate your parents after you blow yourself up, and Chairman Arafat himself will send a telegram of appreciation.
The beautiful notice that Al-Hayat Al Jadida will print about your 'wedding' (to the 72 black-eyed virgins in Heaven).
Anticipation of those 72 black-eyed virgins.
Oh yes, the $15,000 per year that Chairman Arafat will pay to your family. Saddam Hussein will send money too.
