Remember these claims of Mitsubishi GDI? From the 9/7/96 issues of Economist magazine:

"Compared with a conventional engine of comparable size, Mitsubishi claims its new GDI (gasoline direct injection) motor uses 35% less fuel, produces 35% less carbon dioxide and 95% less nitrogen oxides in its exhaust, and yet turns out 10% more power. Even rivals have applauded the new design."

Pretty good, eh?

Fast forward to Automotive News, Jan. 14, 2002, speaking of the Chrysler project to build common engines across product lines to create economies of scale:

"If approved, the engine project would represent Mitsubishi's latest step away from its gasoline direct-injection engine technology.

In the late 1990s, Mitsubishi vowed to spread direct-injection engines across its model lineup and touted the technology's higher fuel efficiency.

But since DaimlerChrysler's purchase of control of Mitsubishi, direct-injection engines have been de-emphasized."

Hey they lost, because they never got anywhere near producing as they claimed thanks to injector fouling and the plain lie about engine-out nitrogen oxides under lean burn conditions. Orbital has control of the field. This is a surrender of the chief automotive competitor. I consider this huge news. OCP LPDI is the next generation and it works. It offers more control of the combustion process than is possible any other way. Let's get it on the road.
