Ericsson checks T65 humming complaints

AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE in Stockholm

Ericsson's popular T65 mobile phone makes such loud humming sounds during calls that dissatisfied consumers and retailers are returning it in droves, according to a report in Computer Sweden.
The T65 has been so popular since its launch last autumn that Ericsson has not been able to meet consumer demand.

However, according to Computer Sweden's report yesterday, the telephones make loud humming sounds during telephone calls to both fixed and mobile phones.

The company said the problem was discovered only after deliveries during the Christmas rush.

"There hasn't been a T65 that doesn't hum," said Mikael Forsberg, a mobile phone repairman. "Some hum more than others. It's just a construction error on Ericsson's part."

Ericsson said that the report had come as a surprise to the company and could neither confirm nor deny it.

Sony Ericsson's Nordic sales and marketing manager Roger Bolander said: "We are aware of the fact that some of the first phones that went out made a humming noise, but no more phones than in a normal delivery. That problem was addressed, and was supposed to have been taken care of.

"That the problem would affect all of the phones is something of a surprise.

"We have people out today checking the latest deliveries to determine what the situation really is."
