I understand XP is a little more sophisticated than earlier versions of Windows when it comes to disk defragging. Previously, Windows tracked data by files. If a file was well used, the whole file was located in prime disk real estate. Now we all know that few users exercise all the capabilities of today's super feature-rich software packages, so in a great many cases, significant portions of large files are never used. XP examines not only which files it should optimize, but also which parts of those files are critical to performance. And all this happens seamlessly thanks to a modern operating system.
