Private-sector payments of all types are indexed to the CPI, also, so it's not just a government concern. Wage rates negotiated in labor union contracts, rental increases in lease agreements are just a few things that come to mind which are affected.

I'm thinking maybe there is some disconnect between what I mean by the term "political" and what some of y'all are talking about. To me, the politicians are the ones who occupy the White House and the top-level Cabinet and sub-Cabinet positions in government. These people come into office and rock the boats of every government agency, because they are in charge. But BLS is set up NOT to be rocked by this group.
