Americans pretty much all aspire to grow old. When an idea is that popular it is inevitable that there will be public involvement. One of the great problems with a self directed retirement is the "VCR problem". The more whizzbang features, and multi-cast options, and auto-timing gadgets stuck into a VCR the harder it is to just set it to record your favorite show. People get more upset when their plan to grow old is thwarted than if they miss their favorite show. A defined benefit retirement, such as the current social security, acts as a one touch retirement option, one in which you won't have to find your reading glasses and worry about altheimers to succeed.
