Novell Inc. has shipped a new version of its groupware and messaging platform, GroupWise 5.1, with an emphasis on Internet capabilities. The product now includes client support for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), the emerging Internet-based standard for finding files and people over IP networks. Like previous versions of the product, GroupWise 5.1 supports expanded e-mail functions, including broad support for document management capabilities.
The product's Universal Mailbox gives users one-stop access to personal calendaring, group scheduling, tasks, voice-mail, faxes, and other types of messages. Users can access the mailbox from the desktop or via the Internet using GroupWise WebAccess and any HTML-compliant browser.
GroupWise 5.1 provides native support for Internet standards such as TCP/IP, HTTP, HTML, SMTP/MIME, and LDAP (client). GroupWise 5.2, in beta at press time, adds support for IMAP4, POP3, dial-up SMTP, and LDAP (server). Version 5.1 also features speed improvements, including optimized client-server connections, faster startup, and increased message throughput, according to the company.
