Tony - Re: "IDC forecasts that the McKinley version of Intel’s Itanium Processor Family (IPF) will provide approximately $500M of new revenues in 2002, "
Is this $500,000,000 revenue to Intel for McKinley CPUs or $500,000,000 in SEVERS for server manufacturers?
If it is CPUs, that amounts to only 200,000 McKinley CPUs at an ASP of $2,500 - so the numbers are certainly doable.
If the "average" McKinley server is a 4-way, that amounts to 50,000 servers - a doable - but sizeable - number.
If IA64 revenues rise quickly to $500,000,000 and increase from there, Intel will recover its R & D expenses for ITanium development in just a few years - and the gravy train will be steaming down the track for years to come after that !
