Neo, the reason for the secession is separate from the right to do so. (of course an outstanding reason might cause people who recognize no such right to accept secession). The federal government was created by the states not the othe way around. The original conception of this country was that where the center would be weaker and the state relatively more powerful. This was esp. true under the articles of confederation but it remained true to a lesser extent even under the constitution. It's unclear whether there was/is a constitutional right for states to leave the union. Reasonable people could come down on either side of the issue. Of course the prime motivation for the secession was hardly preserving individual liberty but if the states had a right to secede (and many at the time thought they did) then no special reason or justification is needed.

Of course as a practical matter the Civil War, and also the long term trend of Americans to identify more with their country then their state has settled the issue.
