I don't think it will be impossible to use the AOL version of Red Hat Linux with other internet providers, but I'm sure, that AOL functionality will only be available if you pay AOL. Just like MSN. It will probably ask you to sign up a lot of times, just like MSN.

What they would create is a Linux distribution that improves the experience of AOL users a lot and integrates tightly with it, while still being compatible with all Linux software.

Red Hat has plans for delivering 3rd party software via Red Hat network, and deploying AOL software this way is extremely easy. But I'm also sure that Red Hat will continue to offer a Linux distribution that can be used without AOL. Everything else would be suicide.
