I left my orchids outdoors by mistake...the pots collected water and they all rotted

Sorry to hear about your orchids. Overwatering orchids (or letting them "sit" in water) tends to be one of the most common mistakes made in caring for orchids.

Another big mistake...watering late in the day, especially with Phalaenopsis orchids (moth orchids). Their leaves need to be dry by nightfall or they can rot at the crown of the plant.

Luckily for you, in the Bay Area there is a wonderful resource for buying new orchids. You should visit the S.F. Flower Mart. It is open to the public for retail sales, but only during specific hours, after the wholesale hours. You can check their web site for the exact times you can "shop". Rod McLellan is probably the best known orchid grower who has a shop located in the flower market.
