ESS licenses Super Audio CD from Philips for DVD chips

FREMONT, Calif. -- ESS Technology Inc. today announced it has licensed the Super Audio CD storage format from Royal Philips Electronics N.V. to incorporate in ICs for DVD player applications. The SACD format will be added to the company's Vibratto DVD single-chip solutions in the second quarter of 2002.

ESS said the SACD players are growing in popularity worldwide because these systems are capable of providing higher quality of audio, and there are now more published titles becoming available.

The SACD format uses Direct Stream Digital (DSD) technology, which simplifies the recording and playback mechanism. This results in increased resolution for music storage by more closely following the original waveform of the sound, ESS said. The SACD storage and reproduction technology was jointly developed by Philips in the Netherlands and Sony Corp. in Japan. The format supports two-channel stereo music as well as up to six-channel audio with text and image data.

The growth of the SACD format is one of the reasons why ESS believe DVD players will become "the key multi-function platform for digital home entertainment," said the company's chief operating officer, Patrick Ang.
