gao, are you running xp??? You miss the point if you dwell on the automatic.

Wether it is automatic or not.. The updates don't explain what they are for and they are breaking other working features. Now if there are all these security patches, what does one do. You have just said you donot trust msft to update you computer and know what they are doing. You have no faith in auto updates. So you advocate a product where you don't even follow the manufactures setting.

Msft is stupid for have autoupdates default on and msft sucks because their updates are not properly tested. They are not tested because of the pressure that the security is full of holes and they are fighting serious fire drills for problems that should have not been there in the first place.

XP updates are out of control and the product is not ready for prime time. Last week or so I started using w2k with service pack 2. In a couple of years xp may be OK.

Linux has it's own set of configuration problems. But update don't break things.

rpm -U will update or install. rpm -e will uninstall. Or you download and .configure make and use the executable. It works or not but does not break things.
