I still like the vise metaphor. Although there are very great similarities with the "Anaconda" strategy employed by the US during it's own civil war. Surround, isolate, cut off and squeeeeeze. Arafat too will begin to run out of money as his PA is relentlessly stripped of all the trappings of statehood. The longer they struggle the tighter the grip becomes.

9/11 was an earthquake and the world is realigning on vastly different lines from the cold war. Political Islam has shown it's ugly face to the world and the vast amount of the worlds populace rejects it. The "West" is now no longer just Europe and the US but includes very large segments of the world that have raised themselves up from the 3rd world graveyard and who wish to live in a market based economies free from the strictures theocratic nihilism. India is a classic example of this pattern. Over time I expect many Arab states to follow. One can only swim against the tides of history for so long. :o}

The resurgence of Fundamentalist Islam reminds me very much of the doomed Catholic reaction the Renaissance movements of scientific inquiry, merchantilism, and reformation.....

Simply put, the world has moved on, the genie is out of the bottle, and there is no turning back. There will be no cozy time bubble for Arabs. The verdict of history has always been Change or Die.
