Washington, Dec. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Billionaire Warren Buffett has taken a 5.1 percent stake in Burnham Pacific Properties Inc., which is liquidating holdings after an attempt to sell itself failed.

Buffett holds almost 1.7 million shares in the San Diego- based real estate investment trust, according to a disclosure filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Buffett is chairman and chief executive officer of his investment company Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

Burnham Pacific announced last week that it will make a liquidating distribution of $1.25 per share to its common stockholders, according to a press release. The company raised money by selling eight properties to a joint venture led by affiliates of PO'B Montgomery & Co. and Apollo Real Estate Advisors. Proceeds also will be applied to reducing debt.

Burnham Pacific stock, up 16 percent over the last year, gained 37 cents in midday trading to $5.30.
