Everybody gets on the internet and there is a huge jam
because of line sharing. enter DMT (see AMTX's web site).

I am slightly puzzled.
How does DMT really help the traffic jam ?

There may be a jam on the Net (backbone) because - as Bob Metcalfe is warning - it just can't cope with all this traffic.
If that is so the cures are:
1) Technical - Increase capacity (eg MCI went from OC1 to OC3, and will be at OC12)
2) Economic - Bob wants to start charging Internet users per byte to restrain us all.

DMT dosn't do anything on this, as you've left DMT before you reach the backbone.

Or do you mean that there may be a jam on the local co-ax cable?
It *is* a shared access media, just like ETHERNET, so this is definitely a concern.
But if you believe @Home, they've figured this into their plans...
Maybe they're right, maybe not.
But line code (DMT or the IEEE 802.11 proposed QAM/QPSK) doesn't really help much if you've messed up the entuire architecture & protocol to start with.

>They are pushing the cable modem component as well as
the phone component. Win win. (I doubled down at 14 and plan
to buy 2x more if it goes down to 10).

We'll see.
There is a lot of interesting possibility and debate on using multitone over cable; but it isn't straightforward and thus far none of the standards bodies have been convinced.
(Although some manufacturers do have developments)

The advantages of multitone (and there are others beyond standard DMT) are more concerned with robustness & errors, than congestion (although there is a link).
