I'll never forget one of the first crime stories I read upon arriving in England. Big front page story...a burglar was armed with a knife. Fortunately, it was never used but everyone was aghast that a weapon would be in the possession of a burglar.

Very few police even carry a weapon. That should be a good indicator of how many guns are about. The large majority of gun related crimes in country are drug related. A recent story noted that the conflict in Northern Ireland has resulted in less than 900 deaths since 1968. That's a "war"! What's the running murder count in D.C. since 1968. You're safer in Belfast than you are in D.C. [Not that I'm planning any holidays in Belfast]
