coach john-
We are setting this example to a bunch of fanatics who are ready to kill themselves with bombs attached to their body. Will these pictures of prisoners make them think twice about terrorizing us? Or will it instead find more Islamic recruits to go out shopping for explosive suits.
instilling terror as an example that terror is not acceptable? i don't think so. i believe we should walk our talk... practicing what we preach is the better example.
when one becomes suicidal about a cause, increased displays of brutality strengthen and validate the feeling. but that's not all that bothers me. what bothers me more is that i'm a part these actions that go against my nature. i have natural limits as to how far i can go in the name of revenge, punishment, and teaching lessons. when i exceed those limits, i lose respect for myself and the quality of the life in me is diminished. that's what motivates me to speak out when i get to that point, it's pure self preservation.
if the quality of my life diminishes to a certain point, whether it be from outside force or my own betrayal of my value system, then killing myself or others in efforts to change or improve the world can easily become an acceptable option.
i ain't going down that road if i can avoid it.
a line must be drawn somewhere between self defense and reprisal. the key to defining where that line should be, is "preservation and life enhancement of all life".
almost all sports have officials who are trained to recognize where the lines of acceptable behavior are and they will stop the action when things go beyond what is good for all. officials are necessary because most participants cannot make these self-judgement calls in the heat of battle while they are being driven by emotion, instinct, adrenaline, partisan coaches and fanatical spectators.
we have a lot of emotion, instinct, adrenaline, partisan coaches and fanatical spectators in the US right now. our ability to practice what we preach and use good self-judgement is hampered. we need an international officiating team to stop the action if and when we cross the line. we support the use of united nations observers and peacekeeping forces when countries other than our own are having disputes. it is necessary to support the same when our country is directly involved... for the "preservation and life enhancement of all life".
do you not agree?
