A concern in daytrading chart patterns, especially off of one-minute bars, is the latency or time lag in the price and volume data your charting software is using. A delay of several seconds may result in transacting late in the long bar which often signals the beginning or end of a move, thereby losing a significant part of the move if it turns out to be short. This can occur near the open, after a major news announcement, or when volume is high for any other reason. A little trick you can use if you're trading issues represented on Island is to use the feature in NexTrend which puts the Island Book in a window on the chart page. You can see matching orders melting away the inside quote on Island, and quickly assess the latency in the chart by comparing the prices. You can also use the Island Book to assess the latency in your time and sales window. Of course this is all relative to the latency of the Island Book, whatever that may be.
