King's kin profiteering?

While Martin Luther King Jr. remains a revered, his heirs have sparked heated controversy over their efforts to make money off his status as a historical icon: Since 1993 his family has

*Sued USA Today after it reprinted King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

*Sold footage of a King speech for use in TV commercials (a French Ad for Alcatel)

*Opposed National Park Service plans for King memorial in Atlanta because it didn't include projects meant to generate profits for family-run organizations

*Demanded the park service pay higher annual fees for the right to conduct free tours of King's birth home.

*Slowed plans to build a King memorial on the Mall in Wash, D.C. with warnings that the family would only cooperate if a family-run organization got a large fee.
