<< Was this recent incident just an act of "random violence" or was there some previous incident that stirred up this hornets nest? >>

Yes there was. Earlier in 2001, Palestinians bombed a teenage dance and killed and maimed many Israeli teenage girls.

Then Palestinians bombed a pizza restaurant killing and maiming many innocent civilians.

Then, in late 2000, Arafat turned down a Palestinian State, with East Jerusalem as it's capital, with peace and hundreds of millions in aid.

Then Palestinians blew up a bus killing and maiming many.

So, you are right, there was some previous incident that stirred up this hornets nest.
