11:21AM Nokia hurt by Morgan Stanley downgrade
Nokia (NOK) is dropping $1.63, or 7.2 percent, to $20.87, in midday action. Shares of the Finnish mobile telecommunications giant are selling off in the wake of a downgrade by Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, which slashed its rating on the stock to "underperform" from "neutral." In a note issued Monday, the firm said it expects the shares to fall roughly 40 percent from their Friday close of $22.50 due to its anticipation of a slide in worldwide handset sales. Nokia is scheduled to report its fourth-quarter results on Jan. 24. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial/First Call are looking for a profit of 18 cents a share on average in the period. Among other handset makers, Ericsson (ERICY) is down 23 cents, or 4.8 percent, to $4.58, while Motorola (MOT) is off 40 cents, or 2.8 percent, to $13.85.
