Actually, the use of "drive letters" originated in IBM's CMS system in the mid-1960s. CMS was originally the Cambridge Monitor System because it was developed at IBM's Cambridge Scientific Center in Massachusetts. It first saw commercial release as part of the CP-67 OS in the late 1960s. It was later renamed the Conversational Monitor System and is the interactive component of IBM's VM (Virtual Machine) mainframe operating system.
