Paul, Mozarella continues implosion. Does AMD have any continuing dependencies on MOT for SOI, or is that IBM? I lost track. - Tony

Motorola shutting down four chip facilities

By Reuters
January 23, 2002, 9:20 AM PT

CHICAGO--Wireless technology giant Motorola on Wednesday said it planned to close four more semiconductor facilities over the next nine to 15 months.
The company said in an earnings conference call that it would close one wafer fabrication facility and three assembly test facilities, leaving the company with 8 wafer fabrication facilities and two test assembly facilities.

Motorola also said the closure of the four facilities would result in 2,500 job cuts in addition to the 2,000 cuts that have not yet taken place as part of previous plant closures. It was not immediately clear whether these job cuts were part of its previously announced round of companywide cuts.

Company representatives were not immediately available to comment.

Motorola said the semiconductor unit would cut 6,000 jobs in 2002, resulting in a total unit work force of 24,000 compared with 34,000 at the beginning of 2001.
