Besides, the problem with Europe --should a terrorist attack on the scale of 911 break out-- is that EU authorities would be unable to follow it up with retaliatory measures abroad.... Think about it: in the aftermath of 911, the Pentagon had a ready-made screenplay to offer to US public opinion: a Grand Afghan Crusade --10,000 miles away... and yet, it didn't totally defuse the so-called profiling paranoia at home. In Europe, however, the situation would be far more critical: without any deployment capabilities, the EU (police) apparatus will have to fall back on a fascistic crackdown at home: wholesale dragnets in innercities, round-ups of radicals (unionists, anarchists, etc.), curfews in all major cities, and whatnot.
